World No 1 Novak Djokovic in Action

World No 1 Novak Djokovic was in a league of his own as he took Tomas Berdych apart, winning 6-0 6-2, to claim the China Open title on Sunday. The top seed sealed victory in just 66 minutes, firing 19 winners and taking six of the eight break points offered to him.

He produced a perfect open in set of tennis to bagel the Czech after 29 minutes of brilliance and was on course for a rare 'double bagel', leading 6-0 5-0, before a relieved Berdych staged a brief fightback.

Djokovic was seeing the ball early and returning with tremendous length as his opponent struggled to stay with him.

The Serb won 11 games in a row when Berdych took his second break point opportunity of the 12th to raucous applause inside a sold-out National Tennis Center in Beijing.

Czech hopeful Berdych, who reached the final of the tournament he won back in 2011, held serve to love in the next, but the relentless seven-time grand slam champion was not to be denied his fifth title of the year and 46th of his career after serving out the match.

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray set up a semifinal tomorrow at the China Open with convincing wins on Friday over two members of the younger generation enjoying breakthrough seasons.

On the women's side, Serena Williams withdrew before her quarterfinal against Samantha Stosur with a left knee injury that raised doubts about her ability to play the WTA Finals in Singapore this month.The top-seeded Djokovic defeated Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-4, while sixth-seeded Murray took out U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic 6-1, 6-4.

Third-seeded Petra Kvitova and fourth-seeded Maria Sharapova both won to make the semifinals.

Djokovic said that while younger players like Cilic, Dimitrov, U.S. Open finalist Kei Nishikori and Wimbledon semifinalist Milos Raonic are improving quickly and challenging at the majors, he believes it will still be a while before there's a changing of the guard in men's tennis.

His patience and experience showed against the fifth-seeded Dimitrov, who broke Djokovic twice in the second set but was unable to build on the momentum, making costly errors to give the breaks right back.

''It's logical to expect that in the sport, after so many years of dominance by three, four players, there are some others who are coming up,'' Djokovic said. ''But on the other hand, it's still not happening that they are the ones who are winning Grand Slams and being top three, four in the world.

''It takes time. How long? I don't know. I'll make sure that they don't come any time soon.''

Murray is enjoying his best stretch since back surgery last autumn and missing several months of the season. He lost a close four-set match to Djokovic at the U.S. Open and captured his first title since his 2013 Wimbledon triumph last week in Shenzhen.

He's hoping to carry that momentum into Saturday against Djokovic, who holds a 13-8 advantage in their series.

''It will be very good for me to get that match and see if I can make some improvements from the U.S. Open,'' Murray said. ''If I play like I did at the U.S. Open, I'll definitely give myself an opportunity.''

While there have been few surprises in the men's draw, the women's side has been hit hard by injuries. Defending champion Williams was joined on the sidelines by second-seeded Simona Halep, who withdrew from her quarterfinal against Ana Ivanovic on Thursday with a hip injury.

Williams said the pain was so bad in her three-set win over Lucie Safarova on Thursday, she had no choice but to pull out.

''It throbs just sitting, standing,'' she said. ''I felt it mostly serving because I'm landing on my left knee. That was really killer for me.''

She said she will go to Europe for a knee exam to determine the extent of the injury, and whether she can play the WTA Finals.

''If I feel this way for Singapore, I don't think it's smart for me to play,'' she said. ''I'm just going to see how it goes.''

Kvitova said after her 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Italian Roberta Vinci that she was not surprised the long season was taking a toll.

''It's really difficult. I mean, I'm not feeling full of energy. I'm tired,'' she said. ''It's tough to find energy in the locker room.''

The two-time Wimbledon champion is on a roll, however, coming off a title last week at the Wuhan Open. She plays Stosur in the semis for a chance to reach her fourth final of the season.

Sharapova, a 6-0, 6-4 winner over fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, faces Ivanovic in a rematch of their tight three-setter at Cincinnati, where Sharapova lost after holding match point.

''It was a tough one to lose,'' she said. ''I always look forward to our matches. They're always very competitive.''

Indiana Fever star forward Tamika Catchings has announced she's retire following the 2016 WNBA season.

"I will be retiring in 2016, Lord willing, if my body holds up," Catchings said in an interview on WTHR. "Although I plan to step away as a player, that is not to say I'll step away from the game, hopefully. I am so thankful and blessed to have had an opportunity to play the game I have loved for so long.

"God has truly blessed me with an amazing playing career, and now it's time to start transitioning to what He has for me beyond the lines of the basketball floor."

Drafted in 2001 by the Fever, Catchings was the 2002 WNBA Rookie of the Year and is the league's all-time leader in steals and free throws. She will enter the 2015 season as the WNBA's third-leading scorer and fourth-leading rebounder. The league MVP in 2011, she was the WNBA Finals MVP in 2012. She has been named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year an unprecedented five times, and has twice been the recipient of the league's Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award.

Catchings' career has been synonymous with Indiana Fever success on the court. The Fever owns a share of a WNBA-record 10 consecutive playoff appearances, and has advanced to the Eastern Conference finals in seven of those 10 seasons. Reports from Aljazeera Sports news Says Men's top seed Novak Djokovic maintained his perfect China Open record but Caroline Wozniacki's hopes of qualifying for the year-ending WTA Finals in Singapore took a hit after she crashed out.

World number one Djokovic needed 85 minutes to overcome Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-3 7-5 in the second round and extend his China Open record to 21-0.

Djokovic, eyeing a fifth title at Beijing, broke the big-serving Pospisil four times and lost only six points on his first serve in his dominant display.

In the women section, Australian Samantha Stosur showed flashes of her old brilliance to beat Wozniacki 6-4 7-6 in their second-round encounter.

Wozniacki needed to win the Beijing title to qualify for Singapore but was troubled against a sharp-serving Stosur, who broke her in the seventh game to claim the first set and saved five set points in the tiebreak before closing it out.

Wozniacki can still qualify for Singapore this week, if Angelique Kerber does not reach the quarter-finals and Ekaterina Makarova falls before the final.

Third seed Petra Kvitova, the fourth and the latest to qualify for the eight-player season finale, beat local favourite Peng Shuai 6-4 6-2 in another second round match.
